Salary NegotiationsSalary negotiation can be one of the most important factors in whether or not you accept a specific job. It can also be the most difficult part of the job search. First, you have to know what your job is worth:Take advantage of the network that you have built during your job search. Ask people in the industry "What is the normal salary range for this type of job?" or "What do individuals with these qualification and levels of responsibility make in this industry?" Second, know what you are worth:Accepting the employer's first offer may not be your only choice. Remember, this is your chance to convince the employer that you are a capable individual who will bring additional value to the organization. Many companies have a salary range set for each position and offers are negotiable within that range. When entering salary negotiations always be prepared and ready to give examples of your skills. Always have your goal salary range in mind. Finally, be realistic:Know what both you and the position are worth and be prepared to discuss this honestly with the employer. Be realistic about your expenses. Approach the employer with legitimate reasons for why you should be paid at least a certain salary. Be able to explain your reasoning with proof. Research what you need to make in order to be able to afford to take the job and be prepared to discuss this with the employer. Your goal is to reach common ground where both of you are satisfied. Do not forget to consider all aspects of compensation, do not focus on only the base salary. Many of the other benefits will enhance a total compensation package. |
